Of all the Christmas songs, Little Drummer Boy is one of my favorites. It’s extravagant storytelling in all its simplicity and minimalism.

Gold, frankincense, myrrh. The Magi bring such fine gifts to the newborn Jesus in his manger. All the little drummer boy has is his drum. “Shall I play for you?” he asks the baby, and Mary nods. So he plays, the best he can, and the baby smiles. “He smiled. At me and my drum.”

I wish I had written it, but I didn’t. Katherine Kennicott Davis did in 1941.
